Carnaval Around the World: From Portugal to Rio and Beyond | Art of Saudade

Carnaval, a time of lively celebrations and colorful parades, has become a worldwide event, celebrated by people of all ages and cultures. But where did this festive occasion originate, and how has it evolved over time?

From the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro to the charming towns of Portugal, Carnaval brings people together.

So, what does the word “Carnival” mean?

Carnival, or “Carnaval” is derived from the Latin “carnis levare”, which means “to remove meat”. It was traditionally a time of feasting and revelry before the start of Lent, a period of fasting and reflection in the Christian faith. However, the origins of Carnaval can be traced back to ancient pagan rituals, such as the Roman festival of Saturnalia, which celebrated the god of agriculture, Saturn.

In Portugal, Carnaval, also known as “Entrudo,” is celebrated in various ways across the country. Some of the most traditional carnaval festivities in Portugal today are the ones in Ovar, Estarreja, and Mealhada.

As the parade begins, the streets are transformed into a swirling sea of color, movement, and sound. Each samba school takes its turn to dance and sing its way down the avenue, representing a powerful expression of cultural identity and community pride.

In Brazil, the Entrudo took on a more exuberant character, blending elements of African, Indigenous, and European cultures. The festivities became more extravagant, with parades, music, and dance, and the throwing of water, flour, and other substances took on a more ceremonial quality.

Today, Carnaval has become synonymous with the country’s identity. It is the biggest celebration of the year, attracting millions of tourists from around the world. The Brazilian Carnaval is known for its elaborate costumes, samba music, and street parties that last for days.

Other countries that celebrate Carnaval include Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras is the city’s biggest celebration and is known for its colorful parades and parties.

Whether you are a seasoned Carnaval-goer or experiencing the festivities for the first time, there is something magical about the energy and spirit of this joyous event.
