Cycling from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Venlo, the Netherlands: A Journey Across Borders | Art of Saudade

Nestled in the north of Europe, a cycling adventure awaits that will take you through charming landscapes and across international borders. This journey from North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany to Venlo in the Netherlands is not about the physical distance; it’s about a distance that reveals landscape and cultural contrasts, and a border that blurs the lines between two neighboring worlds.

During my numerous visits to Northern Germany, I’ve often encountered remarks like “Dutch drivers are not as skilled as Germans,” or “Dutch folks prefer shopping in Germany due to lower prices, while Germans fill up their tanks in the Netherlands for the same reason.” These perceptions may vary, but they shed light on the fascinating border mindset of individuals residing in close proximity, yet with noticeable cultural distinctions. This intrigue led me to explore the other side of the border—the Netherlands, particularly the area around Venlo—a journey that any amateur cyclist can embark upon.

The total distance between Straelen, the North Rhine-Westphalian city I chose as my starting point, and Venlo is no more than 15 kilometers. While the exact route may vary depending on your preferences and your starting location within North Rhine-Westphalia, you can expect an enjoyable ride of around an hour.

The biking route is really well-crafted, a testament to the biking culture thriving in the region. It offers a seamless and straightforward experience, making it incredibly easy for cyclists of all levels to navigate and enjoy the journey. This cycling path not only enhances the physical aspect of the trip but also showcases the dedication of the local community towards promoting cycling as a means of exploration and connection with the picturesque landscapes and diverse cultures that define this border region.

Don’t be afraid of German landscapes, it’s called romanticism, not dystopia!

Your adventure begins in the picturesque North Rhine-Westphalia. The initial stretch may take you through serene countryside, charming villages, and if you’re lucky, nice weather.

A significant point in your journey is crossing the border into the Netherlands. As you pass the border markers, the distance is not just measured in kilometers but in the subtle changes in culture, architecture, and landscapes. The transition is seamless, and yet, it marks a shift in your adventure.

With each pedal stroke, you get closer to your destination, Venlo. The kilometers remaining become fewer, but your connection with the route deepens. You might even find yourself encountering friendly locals and discovering hidden gems along the way as you approach the city, and suddenly, conversations shift to a different language.

Ultimately, the distance you’ve covered transcends mere numbers. It’s a journey where nature’s beauty weaves its own (fairy)tale, where the concept of borders becomes blurred within the European Union, where the shift in language, culture, and even mindset can change in just a few kilometers.

This experience reminds us that the real distance we travel is within ourselves, as we explore the rich tapestry of diversity that exists in our world, often hidden just around the corner.
